Harpist Brandee Younger, is known for sharing the stage with Jazz Royalty Jack Dejohnette & Ravi Coltrane, laying down tracks with Grammy-Winning Rapper Common and Artist and Producer Ryan Leslie, as well as bringing to life the Classic Impressionistic work of Maurice Ravel. Her ability to feature the Harp in genres of music where the instrument is often absent is a testament of her love for the instrument, and her cross-reaching ability as a musician.

Brandee Introduced me to Dopeness

I was recently in New York — Manhattan to be exact — to do a couple of photo shoots, and as usual I was hanging out with my talented cousin Brandee Younger. She’s an amazing harpist (check her out) and she always introduces me to new music, mostly jazz. So she’s playing music on her laptop as I edit pics from the shoot earlier that night and I was taken aback by the melodic sounds that were blaring through the speakers of her Mac, LOL. I have not been able to stop listening to the song since. It went so well with the shoot I’d done, that I made a slide show for it named “The ‘F’ to Manhattan” and used the song as the soundtrack. Its by a pianist named Robert Glasper and it features Bilal as the vocalist. I feel like everybody needs to experience this song as i did.

An Interview with, Doug Goldman

Doug is a true artist in every sense of the word. He continues to push the envelope with every role he takes on. He is totally diverse in his background and talents from being a police officer to an awesome computer whiz as well as a singer, dancer , actor and musician. He keeps his audience as well as his fellow actors entertained with his quick wit, wise words and big brother nature. He is truly a “FireStarter”.

If there was one role you could play ……

Doug Goldman:

VashtiBlue:

I have heard you say that is it the rehearsal process that you like the most. What happens during the rehearsal process, for you ……………

Doug Goldman:

Goals are set and accomplished. I can see something go from chaotic confusion to a finely tuned piece of art. Relationships are established, nourished and fine tuned. I actually get a little sad when the show starts. With each show we get closer to the end of the production and the dissolve of my new family

VashtiBlue:

Can you discuss briefly your life off the stage, and the struggle, if any, you have in finding a balance with your career, family and your million and one jobs.

Doug Goldman:

Life off stage………………. I’m always balancing what must be done vs what I need to do for me. My wife is awesome at allowing me the space and time to fully commit to productions. Many times, when taking on a new character that character becomes part of me e.g. if I play a gentle and loving person I’m more attentive in my relationship; I’m more patient and tolerant; however, if I play an angry person, I’ve noticed my patience and tolerance shortens. I’m always self- checking to correct these personality bleed-overs. My wife is really great at understanding the artist in me and allows me the space to be all while gently reminding me to “kill that noise”. LOL The jobs are not the center of my life … they are a means to do other things. I need health insurance for me and my family, so the jobs provide that. When I clock out, I clock out and leave work at work. I absolutely love performing. Where else in life can you totally commit to becoming anybody, in any place and not be institutionalized. LOL Gotta love the stage.

VashtiBlue:

What has been your most challenging role ?

Doug Goldman:

I’ve played every type person from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (Jeff Stetson’s THE MEETING) to Miss Roj ( Drag Queen THE COLORED MUSEUM- George C. Wolfe) my most challenging role was that of a homeless ex-jazz singer who in a moment of tragedy had his throat cut (Percy Thomas’ MAN ON THE MOUNTAIN). In that show I played about 5 or 6 characters.

VashtiBlue:

What is the driving force behind your gift(s)?

Doug Goldman:

I absolutely cannot waste a gift that God has blessed me with. I’m not a math genius, not a politician, and not a doctor but if you watch me long enough, I can convince you that I’m any person in any situation in the human spectrum of life possibilities

VashtiBlue:

What keep you grounded and focused?

Doug Goldman:

I’m constantly aware that at all times someone is watching me. Now that’s not necessarily a creepy thing. Children, little neighbors, nieces, nephews, cousins etc. are always watching our every move. They take their leads from all the adults in their visual space both negative and positive. I choose to set the good example because I’m fully aware that at anytime God giveth and he taketh away. It is possible, in the next 15 minutes to forget who you are, where you are, and what you are doing in your space. God holds us and our cerebral capacities together. Aside from that, my Julliard graduated son Dwayne Washington, my Morgan State Univ. student-daughter Stephanie Goldman and my wife Marie Goldman, will not allow me to stray. Loves my family.

VashtiBlue:

How have you diversified yourself in the arts?

Doug Goldman:

I have, what I call, an applied relative consciousness. All the things I’ve learned in all my life, I apply to any and all situations. Because of this I’m able to transform and become whatever I need to be. You can see me in commercials (television and internet), on billboards through-out the country, magazines, movies, jazz clubs and on stage. I’m not restricted by anything short of my own imagination. Expression is freeing.”

VashtiBlue:

What secondary talents do you bring to acting?

Doug Goldman:

I’ve enjoyed many civilian occupations; paper boy, teacher, counselor, musician, dancer choreographer, police officer, forensics, corrections, military intel etc., the list goes on. All of which require a certain talent and skill. I bring all of those to my acting table. Oh yeah … I sing also. LOL

VashtiBlue:

Who has been your mentor(s), in the arts and how have they shaped the artist you are?

Doug Goldman:

I’ve met quite a few persons of notoriety but I must say that my biggest influencers (and there are many) come from the artists in my everyday life. I hate this type question because there are some very important people in my life and you can’t just name one or two without feeling you’ve not paid homage to others. So I’ll just give a life of thanks to Morgan State University, Coppin State University, The Arena Players (The longest continually run black theater in this country) The African Continuum Theatre Co., Pin Points Theatre Co., and LaSure Productions, as well as family and friends of who are all artist of varying types. Thru their truth and experiences I’m able to grow and measure myself and abilities without prejudice.

VashtiBlue:

What advice can you give you to that person trying to become and actor or to that actor trying to take it to the next level?

Doug Goldman:

Embrace that thing you do and get your hustle on and grow. I feel the true measure of a person isn’t what you do when all is well; it’s what you do when you’re tired, burned out, frustrated and have no answers. It’s during those times that you need to dig deeply and find that next audition, lesson, actively network and maintain your “thing”. Keep at it. Spend time learning who you are, so you don’t waste time and energy with needless things. Time isn’t promise to any of us. Don’t even be limited by your own imagination and above all pray like you have a patent on it.

Vashtiblue:

I have watched this man from audition to rehearsal to the closing night of a play, and he is so dedicated and open to his craft. There are many actors in Baltimore who seek to be stars but Doug is truly a gem to Baltimore’s theatre community. He gives his all to every role he play without hesitation. He stays grounded and focused on the task at hand. He is both an awesome performer and man.

Yoooooooo! These Twins Got sPunk……

Whats up world? I usually don’t do written blogs but this is a rare occasion. I recently shot Devin Browns Euphoric Warfare fashion show in Baltimore and noticed 2 ROCK STARRISH looking chics sitting in the front row. They screamed fashion without saying a word. So I took a couple candid shots of them and kept it moving. While editing the pics I notice that they were twins. I was like “They’re twins?” LOL and I just had to find out who they were. So I put an ABP out on them on Facebook and eveybody seemed to know who these young ladies were and were not reluctant to pass on their info. So with the info I received I did some research and found that COCO and BREEZY (www.COCOand Breezy.com) are the two young ladies that unconsciously put the pep in my step. Thanks Ladies. I hope we can work together in the future.

Mark Harris A.K.A. Mark Baltimore was one of the coolest people I knew! Always flashing the Baltimore” tattoo on his left forearm. I remember after every party he would show me a new fighting move, demonstrating on one of the security guards. I also will never forget how he always used to take my camera from me and get his snap on! We miss you Mark! You’ll never be forgotten. ~Kyle
